Indian Railway is always known for its safe and pleasant journey throughout India. No matter any season, long travelling is enjoyed by Indians. Many trains are specially meant for holiday trips and many are for daily up-downs. Indian railway is providing safe journey with many facilities like providing meal, online ticket reservation and Tatkal reservation facilities. Most important is that Indian railway is providing ladies compartment in every train.
Recently the Indian Railway has implemented some more benefits for the people which includes Lower birth seat quota is allotted for senior citizens, female passengers above the age of 45 and for pregnant women for their comfort journey. Recently four lower berths per coach are allotted in a sleeper class instead of two berths per coach as per earlier provision. Earlier senior citizen, female passenger above 45 or pregnant women could book under this quota when the person is travelling alone but now they will be able to book accommodation even when two passengers of these categories are travelling. The Indian railways have added more facilities for public services like 40% Concession in fare for Men over 60 years of age and 50% Concession for Women over 58 years of age. Provision for wheelchairs at stations and separate counters at PRS centers for Senior Citizens is also available.
Suresh Prabhu is the Union Railway Minister of India. He is the only Railway Minister who introduced railway budget without launching a single train and focused more on the facilities during the fiscal year 2015-2016. Some of the facilities which are going to be implemented are: 100 rail stations to get Wi-Fi by this year, 17,000 bio-toilets on trains and additional toilets at 475 stations, E-catering services to be extended to 408 stations, to create rail auto hub in Chennai, FM radio entertainment on trains, baby bard at stations, child menu on all trains, local cuisine to be available on trains, ticket cancellation through phone calls, to install 1,780 automatic ticketing machines to name some of them.
When there are rules and regulations, people always try to break them. Many people misuse the concession and seat quota. So there has been rule declared for the people, who ever found cheating by showing their incorrect age, they will be considered as without ticket and are fined charges as a penalty.
Indian Railways has over 239,281 freight wagons, 59,713 passenger coaches and 9,549 locomotives. Indian Railways also operates luxurious tourist trains like Place on Wheels, Maharaja Express, The Golden Chariot, and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels, Deccan Odyssey, and Mahaparinirvan Express. Fairy Queen has also gained tourist attraction as it is the oldest steam engine in operation hauling luxurious train from Delhi to Alwar. There are two UNESCO World Heritage Sites on Indian Railways — The Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus and the Mountain Railways of India which consists of three distinct railway lines located in different parts of India: Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and Kalka-Shimla Railway.
India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the choice of Japan to build India’s first high-speed railway. The planned rail would run some 500 km between Mumbai and the Western City of Ahmedabad, at a high speed of 320 km/hr. Under this proposal, the construction was expected to begin in 2017 and be completed in 2023. It would cost about Rs.980 billion (US$15 billion).
