Flax seeds are small brown or golden colored seeds that originated in the Middle East thousands of years ago. They are very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, calcium, protein, potassium, magnesium, folate, and fiber.

Flaxseed is also known as linseed, Alsi, or Agassi and has recently gained popularity among people who follow a healthy diet. They have a hard shell, and are smooth and shiny from outside.

Flaxseed is a source of healthy fat, antioxidants, and fiber. Flaxseed can also help lower the risk of diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

Good source of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Flaxseed is very useful for people who are vegetarian and have few bard options that contain omega 3 fatty acids. They are an excellent source of Omega-3 fatty acids. This is useful to regulate blood pressure and control inflammation. It is helpful for people suffering from hypertension.

Improve Digestion

Flax seeds are a rich source of dietary fiber which acts as a natural laxative. Thus prevents constipation. Flaxseed can improve the body’s digestive system as it helps in absorption of nutrients by the body.

Flax seeds are full of healthy fats and fiber, it will help you feel satisfied longer so you will eat fewer calories overall which may lead to weight loss.

Prevents Cancer

Flax seeds have high levels of Lignans which help in protecting against breast and prostate cancer.

Prevents Diabetes

Flax seeds are also known to decrease insulin resistance and help in regulating the levels of blood sugar. Regular intake of flax seeds can also prevent diabetes.

Adding flax seeds to your diet can naturally reduce total Cholesterol and Bad Cholesterol (LDL). The soluble fiber content of flax seeds locks in fat and cholesterol in the digestive system so that it is unable to be absorbed and then excreted through the digestive system.

Flaxseed is beneficial for women. It acts as an important nutrient to maintain and restore the hormonal balance in a women’s body. Flax seeds have an ability to increase the chances of fertility. Flax seeds can help women experiencing hot flushes in their menopausal stage. These seeds can also help in reducing the symptoms of pre-menopause.

Flax seeds are anti-inflammatory hence benefits the skin and hair by providing essential fats as well as B-Vitamins which can help reduce dryness and flakiness. Flax seeds also help in nourishing the dry eyes.

Children can have up to 1 teaspoon of flax seeds each day while adults can have up to 1 tablespoon per day. Anything taken in excess can be bad for you. So, avoid taking an excess of flax seeds. Taking large doses of flax seeds can result in few side effects like flatulence, stomach ache, and diarrhea. Flax seeds have a laxative effect hence people suffering from bowel disorders are advised to avoid consuming flax seed in any form.

They are very easy to include in your diet. And to reap the most benefits from flax seeds, they should be used in ground form or ground before eating, as whole flaxseeds can sometimes pass through the digestive tract undigested.

Ground flax seeds can be added to the batter for making rotis, parathas, cookies, muffins, cakes, bread, pancakes, etc. Flaxseed acts as an egg substitute for baking. Add to cereals, oats, soups & salads. Try mixing them in shakes, smoothies, dips, or add to your yogurt.
