Churma Laddoo is a famous Rajasthani and Gujarati sweet which is often prepared during the Ganesha festival. It’s made with simple ingredients that are easily available in any Indian pantry. I make these as Naivedyam (offering) to Lord Ganesha on Ganesh Chaturthi. Super easy to prepare these laddoo’s has the goodness of whole grain and jaggery. You can also add different nuts of your choice to make it healthier. Churma is a specialty of Rajasthan. The very famous Rajasthani ‘Dal Bati’ is incomplete without Churma.
Ingredients:
- 2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
- ½ Cup Coarse Whole Wheat Flour/ Semolina
- ¾ Cup Gur (Jaggery)
- 1 ½ Cup Ghee/ Clarified Butter
- ½ Cup Khuskhus (Poppy seeds) optional
- ¼ Tsp. Cardamom powder
- Milk to knead the dough
Method
In a big bowl, take the flours (whole wheat flour and coarse whole wheat flour/ semolina) and add ½ cup ghee to it. Mix it well with hands till it becomes crumbly. Now add milk gradually to knead into stiff dough. Divide the dough into round or elongated shapes of the size of your palm.
In a kadhai (deep frying pan) heat the remaining ghee. Deep fry these on medium heat till it turns golden brown and crisp. You can also bake these at 350 °F for about 40-45 minutes, turning them once in between for even cooking. Bake till it changes color on both sides. Once it cools, coarsely grind them and transfer into a bowl. The churma mixture is ready.
Spread khuskhus on a plate for later use. Now heat 2 tbsp. ghee in a non-stick pan, and add jaggery to it. Cook on low heat. Keep stirring the jaggery so that no big pieces of jaggery are left. Remember not to overheat the jaggery else it will get caramelized and turn hard. Once all the jaggery is melted, add it to the ground churma mixture in a big bowl. Add cardamom powder and mix it well.
You can also add nutmeg powder or powdered nuts if you wish. Shape the mixture before it gets cooled to even size laddoo’s or you can also use laddoo mold. Roll them in khuskhus or you can also top it with some chopped nuts. Finish making the laddoo’s with all the remaining churma mixture. Delicious Churma Laddoo’s are ready to serve. You can store these laddoo’s in an air-tight container.
