Dev diwali is celebrated after 15 days of Diwali on the fool moon night of kartik purnima. It is said to be an auspicious festival known as the “Diwali for Gods”. On this day the devotees takes the holy bath called Kartik Snana in the holy river Ganga or Ganges. Several devotees from different part of the country arrives Haridwar just to take the holy dip in this holy river.
This festival comes on the end of Ganga Mahotsav which starts from Prabodhini Ekadashi or Tulsi Vivah. This is mostly celebrated as a huge event in Varanasi at the riverfront of Ganga. Flowers are offered to the holy river and millions of earthern diyas are enlightened at the step of Ghats in the evening. The tradition of lighting lamps on Dev Diwali was started in 1985 at Panchganga Ghat.
The festival features cultural programs, classical music, shilp mela (art and craft fair), and country boat race. Many priests get together and perform Sandhya Aarti, Bhajans, Prayers and worship the river Ganges. Houses are decorated with oil lamps and rangoli designs on their front doors. Firecrackers are burnt at night, processions of decorated deities are taken out into the streets of Varanasi, and oil lamps are set afloat on the river.
This festival is related to the story of Lord Shiva’s victory over the Demon Tripasur. So Dev Diwali is also known as Tripurotsav or Tripurari. Some people also believed that it is the day of birth of Lord kartik the warrior son of Lord Shiva. It is also believed that Lord Vishnu took his first avatar as a “Matsya” on this day.
As per Hindu Panchang this festival arrives on 30th November which also coincides with the Lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahan mentioned in ndtv news. The Diwali shubh muhurat is at 5.08pm to 7.47pm on 30th November. Kartik Purnima begins at 12.47pm on November 29 and end on 30th November 2.59pm. This year Kartik Snana an important ritual for this festival will not be allowed in Haridwar due to the pandemic.
PM Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Varanasi on Monday for the festival of Dev Deepawali and be the part of this precious moment. He will be enlightening the first Diya from his hand. The details of PM schedule is mentioned in Times of India below:
