In the last topic“Judge your Diamonds: REAL or FAKE”, we showed you how to find out whether our diamond is real or fake at home, and now we will see, if our diamond is not real then what it is?
Diamonds of high quality are really very expensive. What if you don’t want to spend a lot? There are other gemstones that look a lot like a diamond. Not just in its appearance but some also in its physical properties. Some of these gemstones are White Topaz, White Sapphire, Cubic Zirconia, Moissanite, Garnet, Rutile, Spinel and Lab grown diamonds.

White Topaz

Topaz is a mineral available in yellow, red, brown or pale gray in color. White Topaz is also found colorless. This gem is really soft then diamond so it can be scratched easily.

White Sapphire

This gem is found blue in color but sometimes is also found in white.White Sapphire is harder than most other stones used as fake diamonds but is less durable then diamond.

Cubic Zirconia

Cubic Zirconia is a manmade diamond similar to diamond with its brilliance. It is an alternative to diamond having low price found in silvery white color. This is a flawless stone free from inclusions. Cubic Zirconia is significantly softer and this is why it easily collects scratches over time when worn.

This stone is mostly produced synthetically. It is harder than cubic zirconia and has different brilliance then diamond. In this stone you can see rainbow colors inside the stone.

Garnet stone comes in many colors including red, orange, yellow, green, purple, brown, blue, black, pink, and colorless, with reddish shades most common. It is much softer than diamond.

Natural rutile is a mineral and can be found in golden, blood red, reddish-brown or black color, whereas synthetic rutile was produced using extra oxygen and sold as Titania. It has much lower hardness.

Spinel may be colorless, but usually comes in various shades of red, blue, green, yellow, brown, black, and sometimes violet also.

Lab Grown

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with same physical and chemical properties but they will not fetch for the same price as a mined diamond.

These all gemstones are used as a diamond alternative mounted in rings, earrings, pendants and other jewelry and are of low price than a real diamond. But when you purchase diamond you can have certificate of diamond which include fluorescence, polish, symmetry, carat weight, clarity, color grade and cut grade. This certificate should be from a grading authority e.g. GIA, AGSL, LGP, PGGL or other who is affiliated with professional organization like American Society of Appraisers. GIA is the world’s largest and most respected nonprofit institute of gemology research, learning and grading.

GIA grading report is shown below:
