Indian Comedy Shows of Television

From last three decades comedy has ruled the television. Comedy shows are a great hit on television and loved by one and all. These shows were real stress busters and would cheer you up after a long long day. Here are few shows that still have a great imprint on our mind.

Flopshow (1989)

It was a very popular television show aired on Doordarshan. It was written and directed by humorist Jaspal Bhatti. He also played as the main character with his wife Savita Bhatti. All the episodes of Flop Show are satires done on socio-cultural problems of the common man. The show was immensely popular and still gets repeated re-runs on various Doordarshan channels.

Dekh Bhai Dekh (1993)

A show that revolved around the Diwan family who lived in ancestral bungalow in Mumbai was aired on Doordarshan. This show had everything that an extended family faces; ups and downs of life, sibling rivalry, relationship problem, business issues, and in-laws problem.

Shriman Shrimati (1995)

Shriman Shrimati was aired on Doordarshan in 1995 starring Jatin Kanakia, Rakesh Bedi, Reema Lagoo and Archana Puran Singh in the lead roles. It became quite popular due to the good storylines and excellent comic performances from all the lead actors.
The main concept of the story was “Love thy neighbor’s wife”. The story revolves around two couples Keshav Kulkarni and his wife Kokila, and Dilruba and his wife Prema Shalini. Both the men are attracted towards their neighbor’s wife. They make use of every possible opportunity to flirt with each other’s wives, but all goes in vain.

Hum Panch (1995):

Hum Panch was aired on Zee TV in 1995. This was a story of a middle class man named Anand Mathur played by Ashok Sharaf who always falls in trouble because of his five daughters. His second wife Bina always supports her daughters. Each of the girls’ characters was different from each other.
Meenakshi was a feminist, Radhika was intelligent and used hearing aid, Sweety was having no brain and whose sole purpose in life was to get married, Kajal also known as Kajal Bhai was a tom boy and Chhoti was a gossiper.

Tu Tu Main Main (1995)

Tu Tu Main Main was a show which was aired on two channels, first on Doordarshan and later on Star Plus. The name itself means arguments and backbiting. The show goes around the scuffle between both the saas (Mother in law) and the bahu (daughter in law) to show the supremacy over each other. The main characters were played by Reema Lagoo and Supriya Pilgaonkar.

Office Office (2001):

This show was aired on SAB TV in 2001. The very popular character Mussadi Lal played by Pankaj Kapoor in Office Office was astonishing. The show was based on corruption and bribery in public offices.
This story revolved around a common man Mussadilal who always find himself trapped amongst corrupt officials. The series has also won the ‘Best Comedy’ award at the ‘RAPA Awards’ in 2001 and 2002.

Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai (2004)

The show aired on Star One in 2004. Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai was a show that revolved around the lives of upper caste Gujarati family known as the Sarabhai’s who lived in a luxury apartment building. The main characters are Indravadan Sarabhai and his wife Maya, who lived in an apartment with their unmarried younger son Rosesh. Their older son Sahil and his wife Monisha live in the apartment across the hallway. Maya’s supercilious behavior, Monisha’s middle class habits, Rosesh’s bad poetry and Indravadan extroverted nature, this all results in conflict and comedy.

Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai – Take2(2017)

Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai is out with another season Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai: Take 2. It is released as a web series on the Star network’s digital platform Hotstar. The Sarabhai’s are back after almost 11 years. The life of the Sarabhai family has not changed much after a leap of seven years. Now Monisha and Sahil have a seven years old son Arnab aka Guddu. The family has moved to new penthouses.
