Nandini Sahu : A Great Poet, Writer, and an Inspiration

India is a country rich in arts, music, dance, and literature. Indian Arts have spread its wings all over the world with bountiful colors of emotions, talents, hard work, and historic myths through the medium of Cultural and classical songs, folk dances, paintings, handicrafts, and marionettes. And among all these forms of art, poems and literature have a long history dating back in the Vedic times. Poems are written in various Indian languages such as Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Kannada, Telugu, and Urdu. Poems in English are also very popular. Poem builds a connection and touches deep in the heart. There are many great poets such as Rabindranath Tagore, Kalidas, Sarojini Naidu, Meerabai, Sumitranandan Pant, Kabir, Tulsidas, Kamla Suraiya, and Subhadra Kumari Chauhan who has achieved great name through their poetry.

Among these famous poets, is one poet Nandini Sahu who has made her way towards fame and recognition through her literature and poems. She is an Associate Professor in English Literature at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in New Delhi. Nandini Shahu is a double gold medalist in English literature and was the winner at the All India Poetry Contest. She was also honored with the Shiksha Ratna Purashkar for her huge contribution to Higher Education in India. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of Interdisciplinary Journal of Literature and Language at New Delhi.

Nandini Sahu was born on July 23rd, 1973 in Orissa. She is an Indian poet, writer, and critic. She started writing at a very young age. Professor Niranjan Mohanty was the one who guided her throughout her Ph.D. on Indian English poetry. She is also pursuing her D.Litt. in Native American Literature. She even designed programs on Folklore and Culture studies for IGNOU. Nandini has written several books that were published in English Literature. As an acclaimed poet, her poetry is widely circulated, not just in India, but also in US, UK, Africa and Pakistan.  She has a keen interest in Indian Literature, American Literature, Folklore and Culture Studies, English Language Teaching (ELT), Children’s Literature, and Critical Theory.

Dr. Nandini Sahu’s maiden poetry volume ‘The Other Voice’ is a collection of poems where she describes imaginary visuals from her personal as well as social consciousness. This book is a major milestone in the history of poetry in English Literature.  In one of the poems from the book she narrates,

“While words dance on my pen’s tongue, I feel language is a flooded river, not to be damned discorded, and poetry flows from the hedges of the mind breaking the parapets.”

Also ‘The Silence’, ‘Silver Poems on my Lips’, ‘Sukuma’, ‘Sita’, ‘Death stands at a distance’ are some of her great collections. She has even presented papers on several subjects in India and abroad. She has authored and edited volumes like Recollection as Redemption; Post-Modernist Delegation to English Language Teaching; The Post Colonial Space: Writing the Self and The Nation; Folklore and the Alternative Modernities (Vol I & II). In her recent collection of poetry Sita (A Poem), Nandini has presented the story of the great epic the Ramayana from Sita’s perspective. Every feel and emotions are artistically penned down. Her poem touches the heart and the soul. It brings emotional, moral and ethical dimensions to the world. She is a poet of great strength and integrity. She has inspired many women through her hard work, dedication, and writings.
