How to protect your skin from Holi colors? Holi is one of the most joyful festivals celebrated all over India. It is also known as “Festival of Love”, as the day reunites the people. On this day, people irrespective of age celebrate the festival. Most of all children are enthusiastic about the festival, so they start the fun few days ahead of the actual festival by throwing colors, water-filled balloons, and water missiles called pichkaris on each other. Playing with colors makes you happy but these colors are harmful to the skin as well as hair, so take some precautions before and after the celebrations to minimize the damage.

Pre Holi Hair Care: The Holi colors make your hair damaged, dry and frizzy. So, before going to the celebrations make sure to massage your hair with coconut oil from the roots, as oiling is the best method to prevent your hair from various kinds of damages. After massaging, tie your hair like a bun or braid to keep the damage at bay.

Pre Holi Skin Care: Not only oiling saves your hair but also your skin too. So, before going to the celebrations, apply a thick layer of almond oil throughout your body and mostly on the exposed parts. The almond oil is also a rich source of vitamin E that helps in improving the skin texture. Also, applying the oil makes the skin free from sticking colors to it and also becomes easier to rinse off the colors after the play. Instead of oil, you can also apply a thick layer of moisturizer all over the body which benefits in the same way as oil and prevents from maximum damage.

As summer is here, there is a must skin care treatment that we have to follow is to apply sunscreen lotion. So, apply a thick coated waterproof sunscreen on your skin which contains SPF 50+ to prevent from direct exposure of the sun, tanning and also other skin problems that the Sun’s UV rays could possess.

Once you are done with the celebrations, don’t stay under the shower for more and more hours to rinse off the colors. Use these following simple tips to remove the colors easily:

Post Holi Hair Care:

  • Don’t use high chemical based shampoo to rinse your hair. Just use a mild one and rinse your hair slowly such that the chances to the damage decrease. After the head bath, pat dry your hair with a towel slowly and then apply a mild conditioner.
  • If you want to use a natural tip to your hair then apply curd and leave it for half an hour. Then rinse off with a mild shampoo and apply the conditioner.

Post Holi Skin Care:

  • Use herbal and natural soaps instead of high chemical based soaps to erase the colors on your skin, as chemical based soaps lead to more damage. Also, note that don’t rinse your skin so hard such that the skin becomes dry and can also peel.
  • If you want to use a natural tip, then apply curd to soften your skin and wash it off after 15 minutes.
  • Use natural ubtans or home-made ubtans or scrubs such as fuller’s earth, turmeric, sandalwood powder and rosewater which helps to nourish the skin without causing any damage. Continue the use of these scrubs until the colors are completely washed away.
  • Another home remedy to get rid of the holi colors is to apply some lemon juice on to the colors and leave it for 10 minutes. After that wash it off slowly so that the marks will be vanished easily.
  • Take a bowl and add curd, sandalwood powder, turmeric and white flour into a bowl. Mix all the ingredients and apply it as a face mask. Leave it for 20 minutes and wash it off. Hence the colors will be removed without any stain.
  • Dip cotton in the olive oil and apply it all over your body. After some time wash it off with cold water such that the stains will be removed.

If you feel any skin irritation like burning, itching and scratching  on any part of the body then wash it immediately with cold water and pat dry your skin. Applying Aloe Vera gel will help you to get relief from skin irritation and soothe your skin. Alternatively, you can also appy calamine lotion so that it cools down your skin.

Holi colors with chemicals are very strong and hard to remove from skin. These colors are not just harmful to the skin and hair, but they are also harmful to the environment. So try and avoid such colors and opt for eco friendly colors which protects our skin as well as environment. So with these preventive  measures the question of ‘How to protect your skin with holi colors’ does not rise more.

Wishing you all a very Colourful Holi !!!
